These pieces came from me deciding to make a switch from only making sculpture in my academic work, to functional pieces people could use in their homes. I knew I wanted to be a functional potter when I got out of grad school, so why let myself feel stuck making the larger, “Behold, my art!!” kind of work a lot of students tend to subconsciously feel obligated to make? But my genuine need to be heavily sculptural still persisted, and this is what came out of me. All work is functional as drinking vessels, but none can rest on their own. They are made with no flat bottoms or feet. They must either be held, or rest in their bases.
